São Paulo – For Brazilian businessmen in the fruit sector to learn about opportunities in the Arab market, the secretary general at the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce, Michel Alaby, should promote a talk on Wednesday (03) in Natal, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, as part of the schedule of Expofruit, a fair in the sector scheduled to take place from June 3rd to 5th in the city of Mossoró. "There is no doubt that Brazil has potential to become a great fruit exporter to the Arab market," said Alaby.
The secretary general was invited to participate in the event by the Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service (Sebrae-RN), one of the organizers of the fair, with the objective of providing incentives to businessmen to export fruit to the Arab world. "The consumption of fruit in the region is significant. Some fruit, like strawberry, watermelon, cherry, orange and lemon is already produced in some Arab countries, but others, like papaw, melon, mango, tangerine and passion fruit must be bought from other markets," said Alaby.
Apart from that, according to the secretary, the production of the Arab countries is small and not continuous. Among the producers are Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, Algeria and Tunisia. In his presentation, the secretary general should speak about the Arab market for foods in general and about the fruit sector potential, which also includes pulp, juice and sweets, like jams and preserves. "I am going to provide a general point of view of the market. I should speak about consumption, about imports, what Brazil already exports and about the means for transportation for export," he added.
The city of Mossoró, where Expofruit will be promoted, is in one of the main melon production regions in the country, in Açu Valley, which is also the main exporter of irrigated fresh fruit. Last year, the valley exported 92,500 tonnes of melon, for US$ 65 million.
The 12th edition of Expofruit should also include talks by the Brazil-Germany Chamber of Commerce and Industry and by melon producers. In the sidelines of the fair, there should also be business roundtables with 10 importers from Spain, Canada, the Netherlands, England and Argentina. Around 20 Brazilian businesses that produce and export enrolled for participation in the meetings.
