São Paulo – This Wednesday (25th), the government of Brazil announced that it will aid refugees from Mali who have sought refuge in Mauritania. According to information supplied by the Ministry of Foreign Relations, Brazil will donate US$ 300,000 to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
The funds will be allocated to the purchase of tents to provide the refugees with shelter. According to the Doctors Without Borders, many of the inhabitants of Mali arriving at Mauritania have health issues. According to the Brazilian federal government, over 60,000 people have left the country since February.
There was a coup d’etat in Mali on March 22nd, and the African country has experienced major political instability ever since. The government has lost control of the North of the country, where Muslim extremists and local tribes are fighting for land.
