Brasília – Spending by Brazilians during trips to foreign countries continues to grow. According to data disclosed today (21st) by the Brazilian Central Bank, spending totalled US$ 9.888 billion, as against US$ 6.414 billion in the same period of 2009. Last month alone, spending reached US$ 1.302 billion.
Spending by foreigners in Brazil totalled US$ 3.867 billion in the first eight months of the year, as against US$ 3.467 billion in the same period of 2009. Last month, foreigners spent US$ 489 million in the country.
Because spending by Brazilians abroad was greater than spending by foreigners in Brazil, the Central Bank has revised its travel account deficit projection up from US$ 8 billion to US$ 10 billion. The deficit forecast for 2011 is US$ 11.5 billion.
From January to August this year, the deficit was US$ 6.021 billion, as against US$ 2.947 billion in the same period of 2009. Last month, the deficit was US$ 813 million.
