São Paulo – Egypt’s men’s national football team secured its first-ever FIFA World Cup victory on Sunday night (21), coming from behind to defeat New Zealand 3–1 in Vancouver, Canada. Morocco also earned a 1–0 victory over Scotland on Friday (19) in Boston, United States. These are the only two wins recorded so far by Arab nations in the tournament.
The same was true for Morocco, which had also come off a 1–1 draw with Brazil in its second match of the tournament—a noteworthy result given the Brazilian national team’s historical record. Morocco’s victory over Scotland last week came courtesy of a goal by Saibari just one minute into the match. With the result, Morocco moved into second place in Group C.
The other Arab nations competing in the World Cup are Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Jordan, Iraq, Tunisia, and Qatar. Saudi Arabia has recorded one loss and one draw. Algeria has played only one match and lost. Jordan has one defeat, as does Iraq—both teams still have matches remaining in the second round of group play. Tunisia has suffered two losses, while Qatar has one loss and one draw.
