São Paulo – Famous for his coloured plastic items, Egyptian designer Karim Rashid has developed a collection of plates, table centre pieces and decorative glass items for Turkish company Mona Glass. Now, these creations will be available to Brazilian women by means of the São Paulo-based company Vylux, which will be the sole distributor in Brazil of glass items created by the Arab artist.
“Karim Rashid is always recognized, he draws public attention, so we decided to do the promotion and the launch in Brazil,” says José Carvalho, the director general of Vylux. The company already imports glass items from companies based in Portugal and Sweden, and is starting to work with items from Spain and Turkey, such as those produced by Rashid. “We always seek to offer something different from what is available on the market,” he adds.
The launch will take place during the next edition of the Abup Show, a trade fair promoted by the Brazilian Appliances and Gifts Association (Abup), due August 12th to 14th at the Frei Caneca Convention Centre, in São Paulo. The pricing for the collection, which was launched this year in Hong Kong, has not been set yet, but Carvalho reveals that each plate, for instance, should sell for 100 to 200 Brazilian reals (roughly US$ 50 to 100) on the wholesale market.
Vylux distributes the brands Mats Jonason, from Sweden, and Jasmim and Porcel, both from Portugal. According to Carvalho, Porcel is a successful brand in the Middle East, because it offers customized products. One of its leading markets is Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. In the future, Vylux also expects to sell Brazilian brands to foreign countries, starting with Europe.
The company has existed for three years, and its head offices are in the city of Guarujá, in the coast of the state of São Paulo. According to the executive, Vylux does not import items from the Arab countries yet, but contact has been established with companies in the region.
Mona Glass’ items made by Rashid will leave Turkey this week headed for Brazil, but the designer will not attend the collection’s launch in the country.
