São Paulo – The popular movements of the Arab Spring for political and social change were responsible for increased freedom in Middle East and North Africa countries last year. So says the report Freedom in the World 2013, an annual document from the United States’ Freedom House organization on the state of freedom in the world. The organization issued a press release last Wednesday (16th).
According to the report, Libya saw the largest gains of all Arab countries. “Libya has gone from ‘not free’ to ‘partially free’ and boasted one of the best one-year improvements in almost 40 years’ worth of reports,” the release claims.
According to the document, Tunisia, which kicked off the Arab Spring, maintained the gains made in 2011, while Egypt witnessed improvements such as the presidential elections, but also faced serious issues, such as the dissolution of the parliament by president Mohammed Morsi.
