São Paulo – The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) announced on Wednesday (14) that it is going to loan Morocco US$ 130 million. The funds should be used to expand the solid waste collection and recycling and, according to a press statement by the World Bank, should generate 70,000 jobs next decade.
This is the third loan that the World Bank makes to Morocco for the country to improve its collection and treatment of garbage. The two first loans, in 2009 and 2010, were used to create legislation in the sector, promote public-private partnerships and to improve the system for evaluation of the environmental impact.
This new loan should be used to promote improvement to grant the population access to information on contracts between companies and the government and to evaluate the quality of the service offered in their city. The funds will also be used to increase the collection of solid residues, which has grown from 44% in 2008 to 76% nowadays. The target is for all solid restudies to be turned to sanitary dumps and for 20% to be recycled by 2022.
