São Paulo – The International Centre for Agricultural Research in Dry Areas (Icarda), an institution that works in agriculture in arid regions, is accepting applications by scientists interested in working with small ruminants in Aleppo, Syria. The post is to operate at the Icarda headquarters in the Arab country and the selection process is international, according to information published on the institution’s site. Candidates may enrol up to September 30th.
The Icarda is an independent international organisation in the area of research and is part of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), a chain of research centres connected to the World Bank. The Icarda objective is to contribute for the improvement of living conditions in dry regions, through the development of research that may increase productivity in these areas and guarantee efficient use of natural resources.
The scientist selected for the position will work with nutrition, production of forage, management, food technology and marketing turned to small ruminants. The researcher will be responsible for development and implementation of a strategy in the area of genetics and reproduction of these animals, aiming at qualification and adaptation of breeds to the regions in which the Icarda operates dry areas of non-tropical climate.
For the position, the Icarda requires a doctorate in the area of genetics and animal improvement, focussing on quantitative genetics, experience in the use of molecular tools (molecular biology) for genetics and reproduction, three years of experience in the area, experience in research, training and partnerships, knowledge of mobilisation of funds and management of finances, knowledge of English and ability in generation of figures and analyses, among others.
The initial contract, according to information on the Icarda site, should be for three years and may be renewed, according to the researcher’s performance. The institute’s offices where the scientist will work are in a rural region of Aleppo, Tel Hadya, and the position is open to males and females.
