São Paulo – Brazilian imports of chemical products surpassed US$ 4.8 billion in the first two months this year. The amount is 50.4% greater than in the same period of 2007. The list of products was topped by fertilisers and intermediate inputs for fertiliser production.
The data were supplied by the Brazilian Chemical Industry Association (Abiquim). According to the association, chemicals answered to 20% of total imports in Brazil. The Brazilian balance of trade deficit was greater than US$ 3 billion.
On the other hand, exports of chemicals stood at US$ 1.8 billion, 14.9% more than in the same period last year. The leading chemicals exported from Brazil were thermoplastic resins and industrial additives.
