Rio de Janeiro – The Brazilian state-owned oil company Petrobras issued a statement last night (23rd) informing that the drilling of a new well has confirmed the light oil potential at the Tupi reservoirs, located in ultra-deep waters in the pre-salt region of the Santos Basin.
This is the seventh oil drilled at Tupi, the field with the largest reserve of oil and gas equivalent in the pre-salt region, ranging from 5 billion to 8 billion barrels of recoverable oil. The new well, informally known as Tupi Alto (High Tupi), is located 275 kilometres off the coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro and 12 kilometres northeast of discovery well Tupi – 1.
Tupi Alto was drilled at a higher structural position than the other wells in Tupi, and proved, by cable test oil sampling, the discovery of even lighter oil than the average of oils found at other wells in the region.
Petrobras is the operator of the Santos Sea Basin Block 1 (BM-S-1), where Tupi is located, with a 65% share. The consortium also comprises the BG Group (25%) and Galp Energia (10%).
The consortium, still according to the Petrobras statement, “will continue with the activities and investment forecast in the evaluation plan that was passed by the National Petroleum Agency [ANP], which provides for other wells to be drilled until the declaration of commerciality, which is expected to be made in December 2010.”
