Rio de Janeiro – The first shipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG) for generation of electric energy in the country was delivered between the 18th and 26th of this month to two thermoelectric power plants in Ceará. The information was disclosed by a spokesperson for Petrobras.
LNG is imported gas, which arrives in Brazil in ships, in the liquid form (making possible the compression of a large volume of gas). The product is then regassified on arrival in the country.
This process is performed in the vessel itself while anchored in Pecém terminal, in Ceará, which was inaugurated last year. The terminal is operated by a subsidiary of Petrobras (Transpetro).
The first shipment was delivered to Termoceará and Termofortaleza mills. The former, operated by Petrobras itself, has a capacity for production of 220 megawatts, burning 1.4 million cubic metres a day. In the case of Termofortaleza, operated by Endesa, the production capacity is 346 megawatts, with the consumption of 1.55 cubic metres a day.
The transfer of gas between Pecém terminal and the two mills was through a 22.5 kilometre long pipeline.
