Brasília – The cargo throughput in Brazil rose 2.03% in 2012 as against the previous year, to 904 million tonnes. The growth was higher in public ports, with 2.27% greater throughput than in the previous year. In private ports, the growth was 1.91%. The figures were disclosed on Thursday (28) by the National Agency of Water Transport (Antaq).
However, of the total cargo throughput last year, most was transported by private ports. In 2012, the throughput totalled 588 million tonnes of cargo in private terminals (65%) and 316 million tonnes (35%) in public ports. The throughput in private terminals is boosted mainly by the transport of fuels and iron ore.
The container throughput grew 3.6% in 2012, considered a significant factor by Antaq as, on the whole, the average growth was 2%. With regard to the nature of cargo, most was solid bulk (554 million tonnes). Another 217 million tonnes were liquid bulk, 45 million tonnes were general cargo and 87 million tonnes were containers.
