São Paulo – This Friday (18th), the World Bank announced a US$ 38 million donation to the government of South Sudan to “rehabilitate” roads leading to rural communities located in areas with strong agricultural potential. The intention is to have all-weather roads that enable productive agricultural areas to have access to local markets. Thus, job opportunities and the livelihood of the rural population will be increased.
According to a World Bank survey, South Sudan has a road network of 17,000 kilometres, of which only 4,000 are all-weather roads. “The project will thus help to support the country’s attempts to develop its agricultural potential to improve the livelihood of the rural population. By improving access and connectivity to rural areas, the project will also help enhance basic services delivery efforts,” the World Bank claimed in a statement.
According to the institution, the grant is part of a US$ 75 million trust fund the bank manages in order to provide assistance to South Sudan.
