São Paulo – Three Arab national teams remain in contention at the FIFA World Cup: Morocco, Algeria, and Egypt. Morocco has already secured a place in the Round of 16, while Algeria and Egypt still have matches to play in the Round of 32, the first knockout round. Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Tunisia, Iraq, and Jordan were eliminated during the group stage.
So far, Morocco has gone the furthest of the Arab teams at the World Cup. The Atlas Lions pulled off a major upset on Monday (29), eliminating the highly regarded Netherlands in a knockout match. The game ended 1-1 after regulation, but Morocco prevailed 3-2 in the penalty shootout. Morocco, which finished fourth at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, will face Canada in the Round of 16 on Saturday (4) at 2:00 p.m.
Algeria will face Switzerland at midnight on Friday (3) after advancing from the group stage with a 2-1 victory over Jordan, a 3-3 draw with Austria, and a 3-0 loss to Argentina. Egypt will take on Australia on Friday at 3:00 p.m. The Pharaohs booked their place in the Round of 32 after drawing 1-1 with Iran and 2-2 with Belgium and defeating New Zealand 2-1.
