São Paulo – The United Arab Emirates have opened a call for proposals for those interested in curating the country’s national pavilion at the 18th International Architecture Exhibition at the Venice Biennale, which will occur from May to November 2023. The information was published by the Emirates News Agency (WAM). Pictured above, the UAE’s national pavilion in the 2021 edition of the exhibition.
Curators or curatorial teams of architects, designers, artists, historians, and researchers who have worked or studied in the UAE or elsewhere in the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia (MENASA) can submit proposals. Applications can be made until October 31, 2021, at 00:00 am GST.
To apply, it is necessary to submit a concept proposal for the UAE’s national pavilion at the exhibition in Venice, exploring an intriguing aspect of the architecture or built environment in the Arab country that contributes to the understanding and discourse around local, regional, and international architectural practice. Selected finalists will be invited to submit a full proposal for the second round of the process.
“The curatorship of the National Pavilion UAE’s 2023 exhibition presents an opportunity to share an untold story of UAE through the lens of architects at the forefront of international contemporary discourse and culture,” said the executive director of the Salama bint Hamdan Al Nahyan Foundation, Angela Migally, commissioner of the UAE’s National Pavilion.
Citizens and residents of the UAE and international candidates can apply. According to information released by WAM, those who live or work in the UAE or team with a member residing in the country are preferred. If the proposal is by a team, it is necessary to name a leader.
At the 2021 Venice Biennale International Architecture Exhibition, which has been running since the end of May, the theme of the UAE’s national pavilion was Wetland, highlighting the possibilities of how the salt and mineral compounds found in salt pans in the country are inspiring the development of renewable building materials.
