São Paulo – Submissions are open for the Turjurman Award from Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, which is granted to the best book translated from Arabic into another language. The publishing houses that have published the works from Arabic originals can register until the end of August. The winner will be announced and awarded in the next edition of the Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) in November.
The award aims to encourage international translators and publishers to pick and publish writings by major Arab authors, thus contributing to the global appreciation of the Arab literature and improving intercultural communication. Submissions must have been made available to the public between 2011 and 2021.
The total value of the prize is AED 1.3 million (USD 350,000), distributed as 70% for the foreign publishing house which holds the translation rights, and 30% for the Arab publishing house which holds the first edition of the book rights.
The initiative primarily promotes specialized international publishing and encourages the translation to show the world the real image of Arabs and Muslims and their contribution to human civilization across many fields of knowledge.
Each publishing house has the right to submit more than one publication. A 500-word written summary in Arabic or the translation language must be submitted, including an introduction about the author, as well as the content and importance of the nominated book.
The organizers of the Turjurman Award ask the publishing houses to send four hardcopies of the translated book and one Arabic copy (hardcopy or softcopy). A specialized committee of translators and authors will evaluate the submissions in regard to criteria that are related to the strength of the language, style, and the significance of the topic being translated.
