São Paulo – The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (Unhcr) has informed that Brazil’s National Committee for Refugees (Conare) has approved this Wednesday (30th) 680 new asylum requests in Brazil – more approvals than in the whole of 2013. As a result, the number of refugees in the country is up 20% to 6,588 people.
Syrians are the majority among applicants, with 532 requests. Other Arabs had their requests approved: one Lebanese, one Palestinian and one Sudanese. The Conare is an organization affiliated with the Brazilian Ministry of Justice.
