São Paulo – The Secretary-General of Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Laura da Rocha, and the Ambassador of Sudan to Brazil, Ahmed Swar, met on Monday (23) in Brasília to discuss the security situation in Sudan, as well as prospects for expanding cooperation in agriculture and trade between the two countries, according to information from Brazil’s foreign ministry.
Brazil has developed technical cooperation projects in agribusiness with Sudan in recent years and maintains trade exchanges with the North African nation. Between January and May of this year, exports to Sudan totaled USD 789,000, a decrease of 92.1% compared to the same period last year, according to data from Brazil’s Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade and Services compiled by the Market Intelligence department of the Arab-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce (ABCC).
The main products exported by Brazil to Sudan this year are agricultural machinery, tires, and poultry meat. In the opposite direction, Brazil imported USD 46,000—215% more than between January and May 2024—mainly gums used in the production of waterproofing materials.
Bilateral issues were discussed during the meeting in which Swar handed over to the secretary-general copies of his letters of credence, a document that precedes the formal presentation of credentials to the president of the country where the ambassador will serve. Even during this process, Swar is already acting as the Sudanese ambassador in Brasília
