São Paulo – The National Committee for Refugees (Conare), linked to Brazil’s Ministry of Justice, decided to expand the validity term of the identification card given to refugees from two to five years. The document confirms the foreigner is living in the country under the legal status of refugee. The information was released this Friday (25th) by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
According to the UN’s agency, the decision was taken and published in the Federal Official Gazette this week. The new documents will begin to be issued in 30 days, according to UNHCR. The renewal of the document can be requested in the last 90 days before expiration.
To request or renewal the identification card, refugees must go to the closest Federal Police station from where they live. Those under 18 years old must be accompanied by legal guardian.
