São Paulo – Seven Brazilian states and the northern portion of the state of Pará will be recognized as foot-and-mouth disease-free zones with vaccination during the 82nd General Session of the World Assembly of OIE Delegates (World Animal Health Organisation), due from May 25th to 30th in Paris, France. The states pending certification are Alagoas, Ceará, Maranhão, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Piauí and Rio Grande do Norte.
The Brazilian minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply, Neri Geller, is attending the meeting in Paris, which will mark the 90th anniversary of the OIE, of which Brazil is a founding member. Issues under discussion will include international regulations for trade in animals and their products, the guidelines for fighting animal disease and zoonoses, and the quality of veterinarian services worldwide.
