The countries are part of E9, a group of nine countries that are home to half the world’s population and over 70% of illiterate adults worldwide. New targets will be proposed at a meeting in November.

Anglo-Afghan writer Tahir Shah will meet with readers this Friday and Saturday in São Paulo. The main topic will be the Arab tradition of storytelling, the subject of one of his books launched in Brazil.

The event kicks off next Wednesday and will include 350 productions made in 60 different countries. At least six Arab films are in the program. Palestinian filmmaker Najwa Najjar will make a guest apperance.

Until next Sunday, audiences will be able to watch musicians and singers, see the art and sample the cuisine of the Gulf country at Villa Lobos Park. Schools will also host a special science exhibit.

Short films about the history of 25th of March Street, in São Paulo, can be registered until January 5th for a contest organized by the Icarabe and the Arab Chamber. The previous deadline was in October.
