Rio de Janeiro – The Ministry of Infrastructure plans an investment of BRL 30 billion (USD 7 billion) to expand Brazil’s railway network. The money would be obtained through concessions. The information was given by minister Tarcísio Gomes de Freitas, who participated in the 1st Sustainable Development Forum of the Green Coast at the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ) in Seropédica (RJ).
“We’ll invest BRL 30 billion (USD 7 billion) over the next five or six years,” he said. The first concession contract was signed last year and involves the North-South Railroad from Porto Nacional (TO) to Estrela d’Oeste (SP). For this year, expected concessions includes West-East Integration Railway, which connects Ilhéus (BA) and Figueirópolis (TO), and Ferrogrão project starting in Cuiabá (MT) and ending in Santarém (PA).
