São Paulo – Egyptian art is now nearer the public of Brasília, the Brazilian capital. Approximately 30 works of art from the Arab country are being shown in the 5th edition of the International Handicraft Business Fair (Finnar) in the city, and will remain available for public viewing up until April 24th.
"We have been invited to the fair as special guests," says the Egyptian ambassador to Brasília, Ahmed Darwish. "The idea is to show Egyptian art and handicraft to the Brazilian people," he explains.
The items on display include jewellery boxes made of wood and mother-of-pearl with inlaid marquetry designs; a replica of the bust of pharaoh Tutankhamun; replicas of the sculpture of the bird Ibis, considered by the ancient Egyptians to be sacred; and items such as incense holders made of copper, ancient chairs and silver items.
"There are a few items aged over 200," says the ambassador. "Others are not that old, but are unique nonetheless," he claims. According to Darwish, who has been attending the fair on an almost daily basis, the event has also turned out to be a "great opportunity to promote tourism in Egypt." He is distributing brochures, written in Portuguese, about tourism in his country.
The items on display are part of the collection of the Egyptian embassy in Brasília. According to the ambassador, there are around 80 different items.
This year’s edition of Finnar features over 300 exhibitors from Brazil and overseas. In its last edition, the event received more than 80,000 visitors.
