Rio de Janeiro – Brazil saw a 14% drop in the number of private foundations and non-profit organizations. As of 2016 there were 237,000 such entities in the country, or 4.3% out of 5.5 million public and private profit and non-profit companies and entities registered with the Central Register of Companies (Cempre).
The figures were made public this Friday (5) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). Private foundations and non-profit organizations accounted for 2.3 million and 5.1% of wage-earning persons in 2016. This is the first standalone survey of this kind from IBGE, which used to work in tandem with the Institute for Applied Economic Research (Ipea).
Recession was the main reason for the contraction, since these entities rely heavily on public and private funding. As per the IBGE’s survey, the number of private foundations and non-profit organizations was down 14% in 2016 from 2013 and 16.5% in 2016 from 2010.
