São Paulo – The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (Unhcr) is delivering 2,400 tonnes of toiletries, blankets and kitchen sets to 1.2 million internally displaced Iraqi refugees. According to information disclosed by UN Radio this Friday (22nd), the donations will be taken to conflict areas in Northern Iraq by convoys departing from Iran and Turkey.
In addition to aircraft which are being used to fly equipment into the city of Erbil, in the Kurdistan area, 16 containers worth of humanitarian aid products will be shipped to Iraq from Iran this Friday or next Saturday (23rd), as per UN forecasts. Unhcr spokesman Mohamed Abu Asaker has said 174 trucks will leave Turkey headed for Erbil. He said the main challenge is to set up tents for the dislodged victims of the conflict waged by Islamic militants.
