São Paulo – The Brazilian government announced its bid to occupy the non-permanent seat reserved to Latin America and the Caribbean countries in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in the 2022-2023 period. The country had an agreement with Honduras an anticipated its bid, which would only be in the 2033-2034 period.
There’s a reason for the anticipation: during the 2022-2023 period, Brazil will celebrate the bicentennial of its independence. In a statement, the Foreign Minister, Aloysio Nunes Ferreira, said that the “bid reflects the country’s commitment to the multilateral political system and the constructive involvement in the decision-making processes on peace and security, driven by the ideal of a pacific, fair and prosperous world for all, aligned with the constitutional values that govern the Brazilian foreign policy.”
Brazil is the developing country that most times occupied a non-permanent seat on the UNSC: it was elected to ten terms since 1946.
