Brasília – The estimated crop for 2006 and 2007 is 121.5 million tonnes, in over 45 million hectares of cropland. This information was disclosed in the fourth national crop research, disclosed yesterday (11) by the National Food Supply Company (Conab).
The research shows a 4% reduction in the cropland, when compared to last year, and a 1.3% increase in production. The Conab estimate is lower than that disclosed last Tuesday (9) by the Brazilian Institute for Geography and Statistics (IBGE), which points at production of 123.9 million tonnes.
According to the president of the Conab, Jacinto Ferreira, climate conditions are "favourable to agriculture all around Brazil", according to figures disclosed by the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet). The southern region, according to the organization, is expected to produce 50.9 million tonnes of grain, covering a total of 41.9% of the total cropland.
