The director general at the National Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuel Agency (ANP) of Brazil, Haroldo Lima, said that the intention is to cause the opening of the sector not to be restricted to large corporations, be they Brazilian or foreign. The ANP has already promoted two rounds of tenders for the exploration of marginal fields and a third should take place this year.

Last year, 1.75 million motorcycles were proudced in the industrial hub in Manaus, capital of the northern Brazilian state of Amazonas. For 2008, the forecast is for 1.94 million units to leave the assembly lines. The production of two-wheel vehicles generates 15,000 jobs.
The Brazilian oil company reached a market value of US$ 242.7 billion in 2007 and the mining company, US$ 154.5 billion, according to consultancy Economatica. Of the 25 largest companies in the region, 13 are Brazilian. Petrobras and Vale are also among the largest when compared to North-American conglomerates.
According to a survey disclosed yesterday by the Federation of Industries of the State of Paraná, industry sales grew 11% between January and November last year. Exports increased 24%. Shipments to the Arabs totalled US$ 572.6 million, 20% more than in 2006.
