The industry from the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul took the opposite route from most companies: the company opened the doors of foreign trade before turning to the domestic market. What motivated BRV to appear as an exporter was the discovery of a sector that has, up to now, been little explored by the national factories: small retailers and international distributors. The Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service (Sebrae) is holding a series of seminars in the whole country to celebrate the day, dedicated to the small enterprises. These companies are growing in the export market. In 1998 there were 5,778 small Brazilian exporting companies. Last year this number had increased to 7,000.

In all, 35 companies from the country participated in the largest furniture fair in the Middle East, organized in Dubai from the 22nd to the 26th of September. The Brazilian pavilion was visited by around 3,000 visitors and a total of 1,068 business contacts were made. Americanflex, from the city of Ribeirão Preto, in southeastern Brazil, was one of the highlights, having received orders for US$ 2 million worth of products.
