São Paulo – The Managing Director from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Christine Lagarde, met with Tunisia’s prime-minister Mehdi Jomaa in Washington this Thursday (3rd). By the end of the meeting, the Fund released a note in which Lagarde congratulates Mehdi on the adoption of a new Constitution by Tunisia, which “enjoyed the approval of an overwhelming majority at the Constituent Assembly and created a sense of hope”.
On the note, Lagarde, however, observes that Tunisia’s “economic situation remains fragile, with growth insufficient to make a significant dent in unemployment“. “Reducing macroeconomic imbalances, revitalizing investment, and generating more inclusive growth will be prerequisites for ensuring sustainable job creation and fulfilling the legitimate aspirations of the Tunisian people”. She also claimed that the Fund will help the Arab country implement its economic program and congratulated the Tunisian government on their efforts to make the necessary reforms.
