Algiers – Trade between Brazil and Algeria must become more solid, although the country being one of the largest Brazilian trade partners in Africa. "Our trade, however expressive it may be, is unbalanced and our businessmen and government technical teams still know each other very little. We must get to know each other better and see each other as viable options in foreign trade."
This statement by president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is today (08) in Algerian papers and is part of a long written interview he gave to Algerian journalists before travelling. Lula recalled that the trade balance between both countries is negative for Brazil. Last year, the country exported just US$ 384 million to Algeria, whereas sales from the country to Brazil totalled US$ 2.8 billion.
According to the president, it is possible to develop partnerships in the agricultural, social and support to micro and small companies areas as well as public administration information technology. "Our two giant oil companies, Petrobras and Sonatrach, may develop enormous partnerships to act together here, in Brazil or in other markets."
