São Paulo – Palestine had a 27.5% unemployment rate in quarter one 2013, with 271,000 unemployed persons, of which 152,00 are in the West Bank and 119,000 are in the Gaza Strip, according to figures from Palestine’s Central Statistics Office that were released by the Wafa news agency.
The unemployment rate in the Gaza Strip is 31% and in the West Bank, 20.3%. The rate is highest among young people aged 20 to 24, at 41.1%.
The labour force participation rate among people aged 15 or older is 43.4%. There are 1.134 million people participating in the labour force in the Palestinian territory. Of those, 750,000 are in the West Bank and 384,000 are in the Gaza Strip.
