São Paulo – The Palestinian issue and human rights will be the topic of a meeting on August 23 and 24 in Recife, the capital of Brazil’s Pernambuco state. The event will include debates, a film screening and a photo exhibit at the Education Center of the Federal University of Pernambuco, which is hosting it alongside Aliança Palestina-Recife (the Palestine-Recife Alliance).
Speakers will include Brazilians who witnessed firsthand the daily routines of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, and of refugees in Syria, Lebanon, and Turkey, and debates will cover the Palestinian issue, the coexistence with Israel, and human rights. The cartoonist and activist Carlos Latuff, whose pro-Palestine comics have won international prizes, will also be a debater, according to information made public by Aliança.
The program begins on Tuesday, 23, with speakers who are familiar with the Palestinian reality, followed by a discussion of human rights in Palestine featuring the political scientist and UFPE professor Michel Zaidan, the holder of a master’s in International Law and professor at the Catholic University of Pernambuco (Unicap) Rafael Baltar, and the baccalaureate Law degree holder Rafael Vilaça. Evson Malaquias, who holds a doctorate degree in Sociology, will be the moderator.
The day will end with a screening of the documentary Death in Gaza, by the British filmmaker James Miller, who was killed while making a documentary in Gaza. August 23 will also see the opening of the photo exhibit “Sumud, (r) existir,” featuring pictures taken by Brazilians who joined the ecumenical program Programa de Acompanhamento Ecumênico na Palestina e Israel (Eappi), thereby travelling to Israel and Palestine as volunteers.
On Wednesday the 24th there will be meetings with specialists in international issues and in women’s and children’s rights. A roundtable panel will feature Latuff, human rights activist Sandra Guimarães and the photographer Karine Garcês. In the evening, Latuff and UFPE professor Rodrigo Jungmann will go over Palestine-Israel relations. Another UFPE professor, Daniel Rodrigues, will perform moderator duties.
On Friday, August 26, Aliança Palestina-Recife will host a vegan Arab dinner cooked by Sandra Guimarães, who’s also a chef. The dinner will happen at Recife’s Papaya Verde restaurant, with proceeds going to the seminar’s organization. The meeting at UFPE is free of charge, and the dinner carries a cost of BRL 80.
Aliança was established in 2014 by a group of Pernambuco state natives, some of whom are of Palestinian descent, and it works to spread information on the Palestinian cause, as well as host related events. It has done street art interventions, festivals, documentary festivals, and fundraising efforts to send to Gaza.
