São Paulo – The president of Egypt, Mohamed Morsi, will be in the Brazilian capital Brasília this Wednesday (8th) to attend a meeting with president Dilma Rousseff at Palácio do Planalto (the presidential palace). According to information from Brazil’s Foreign Ministry (Itamaraty), agreements will be signed for technical cooperation, social development and agrarian development. Brazil’s National Library and the Library of Alexandria will also enter into an agreement.
Drafts on other topics were still under negotiation by officials from the two governments as of late this Tuesday afternoon (7th), meaning that further treaties may be signed.
According to the Itamaraty, Egypt’s government is keenly interested in Brazil’s programs for income transfer and fighting extreme poverty, in particular Bolsa Família, which ensures a minimum income to families whose children stay in school, hence the social development agreement.
Another major area of interest to Egypt is investment attraction. The country is experiencing economic turbulence, and Egyptians want to signal that it is open to foreign capital. To that end, Morsi travels alongside a delegation of businessmen who will engage in matchmaking rounds with Brazilian enterprises at the offices of the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce, in São Paulo, also on Wednesday.
Besides, the president himself will be in São Paulo next Thursday (9th) attending meetings with the business community. He is scheduled to attend breakfast and a meeting at the headquarters of the Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo (Fiesp) along with Fiesp president Paulo Skaf. Morsi should also meet with some Brazilian businessmen and representatives of sector associations.
In Brasília, following the reception at the presidential palace, Morsi will attend luncheon at Foreign Ministry seat Palácio do Itamaraty, and then he will be received by the president of Congress, senator Renan Calheiros (affiliated with party PMDB in the state of Alagoas).
