In 1981, natural gas answered to just 0.9% of the Brazilian energy matrix. With growth of approximately 13% a year, by the end of 2004 participation had risen to 8.9% and the forecast is that it should reach 11% by 2010. To reach this target, the Brazilian oil giant Petrobras, the main player in the sector, is going to invest US$ 16 billion in the sector over the next five years.

The increase was registered in comparison with February 2004. In relation to January, however, there was a retraction in 0,1%. The states that influenced the performance the most were São Paulo and Minas Gerais, in the southeast. In these states, the sectors that advanced the most were of machinery and equipments, vehicles, electronic products and telecommunications.

The factory, which is in the midwestern Brazilian state of Goiás and cost around US$ 100 million, produces brand models under a license from the Japanese group. It belongs to businessmen Eduardo Souza Ramos and Paulo Ferraz, who have been working in the area of production and sale of automobiles for decades. The company produces up to 23,000 units a month and had revenues of approximately US$ 620 million in 2004.

The Brazilian vehicle maker has just hired an executive to promote sales in the Middle East and Africa. The company has already exported bus chassis to countries like Lebanon and Kuwait. This year the company, that also makes trucks, motorcycles, tractors and engines, hopes to grow around 10%.

The country shipped the equivalent to US$ 8.789 billion in agriculture and livestock products during the first three months this year. There was an increase in spite of the drought that hit the southern region of the country and caused the loss of crops. Oceania and the Middle East were the regions that increased the most as destinations in the period.

This statement was made by the Brazilian minister of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade, Luiz Fernando Furlan, last week, and is strengthened by specialists in foreign trade.  Despite the Brazilian currency having gained in value against the dollar since the end of last year, exports continue on the rise. In the first quarter, they grew 25.7%.
