Entrepreneurs, associations and universities from the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul are working to create a centre to develop the sector. The aim is to take new technologies to the local companies in the sector, thus improving exports, by shipping more jewels and artefacts and less uncut stones. The state participates with 6% of international sales of the Brazilian gems and precious metals sector.

A total of 4,500 cars produced at the General Motors factory in São José dos Campos, in the interior of the state of São Paulo, will be loaded onto one vessel and shipped to Mexico. Thanks to recent works, the port can now receive large vessels. The government of the State of São Paulo wants to transform the terminal on the North shore of the state into an alternative to the port of Santos, the largest in Brazil.

Oil was mostly responsible for the growth. Among the Arab nations that most increased their revenues with exports to Brazil are Algeria, Saudi Arabia and Iraq, three of the great oil suppliers to the country. Apart from the increase in the price of the commodity, Brazil is also purchasing more crude oil due to the drop in domestic production and to the increase in internal consumption.

Sales reached US$ 3.35 billion. In the evaluation of the secretary general of the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce (CCAB), Michel Alaby, up to the end of the year, shipping revenues to the region should total between US$ 3.8 billion and US$ 3.9 billion. The export increase was pushed mainly by sales of food. In October there was a small drop with regard to the same month in 2003.

The truck factory belonging to Fiat has been installed in Brazil since 1997 and currently exports to Colombia, Venezuela and Argentina. The aim is, however, to conquer the whole of America in the near future, and maybe even more. With the expansion of Brazilian economy, the company predicts a good performance for the following year. The company has 48 factories worldwide and has recently settled a contract for the sales of 400 vehicles to Egypt.

In the first nine months of the year, shipping to Syria had already generated US$ 133 million, against US$ 66.6 million in the whole of last year. Syria, which was visited by Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva at the end of 2003, started buying more food, like sugar and coffee, so as to sell to Iraq, and vehicles, due to the economic embargo imposed recently by the United States.

According to research carried out by the National Confederation of Industries, 94% of the large companies and 82% of the small and medium sized companies have the intention of investing to increase their production in the following year. In the investigation carried out in 2003, the registered percentages were of, respectively, of 86% and 80%.
